Log Processing

MPM has put many years of experience to work designing comprehensive log optimization solutions. We have developed software solutions for log bucking, sorting, rotation, primary breakdown, and cant optimization. Our goal is simple: to increase your productivity and yield by providing best-in-the-industry software, hardware and ongoing support for your sawmill operation.

MPM’s Bucking/Merchandizing Optimization system scans and optimizes tree-lengths to provide the optimum bucking solution. This is the first optimizer in the product cycle, and determines the best stem solution by analyzing physical defects, considering the parameters of user-defined blocks, examining machinery models for the destination of each block, and following any product or log mix factory requirements.

Some of the features of our market-leading Bucking/Merchandizing Optimization System include:

  • Advanced geometric and surface log grading system
  • Analysis and optimization for saw logs, plywood blocks, poles, and value logs
  • Full geometric and surface image data analysis for grading stems and logs
  • Detects sweep, flare, pistol grip, catface, nodal swells, surface knots, and other defects
  • Can employ bark removal algorithms for sites scanning with bark on
  • Supporting MPM’s mill-wide centralized management system
  • Full reporting system using Microsoft SQL Server databases and Crystal Reports

Our Bucking/Merchandizing Optimization system is widely considered to be the best in the industry. It offers a data trending module for tracking production output and maintaining your desired product and log mix output. For example, it can be set to specific parameters such as 70% 6” cants, 25% 4”cants and 5% 3” cants.

We are constantly evolving our log Bucking/Merchandizing Optimization system; we have dedicated over two decades of continuous product development into this system and have created the most functional log bucking optimization system in the industry

MPM’s Log Sorting system scans and optimizes for sorting logs by diameter and/or sawing pattern. This system will determine which logs fail specifications and need to be rejected from the system. We have designed the Log Sorting system to be versatile – it is currently capable of incorporating 3D geometric data, surface imaging, X-ray inputs, as well as being adaptable to new advances in scanning technology.

Some features of our Log Sorting system include:

  • Advanced geometric log grading
  • Employing virtual bark removal algorithms for sites scanning with bark on
  • A range of sorting approaches: pattern, center cant, diameter, log grade, etc.
  • Live simulations to help evaluate different parameters and machine configurations
  • Supporting MPM’s mill-wide centralized management system
  • Full reporting system using Crystal Reports and Microsoft SQL Server databases

Our Log Sorting System fully supports revenue scanning applications such as: load entry for log payments based on volume, custom formulae for revenue calculations, along with custom reports and external access to SQL data for log suppliers.

We have installed our Log Sorting system in over 30 sawmills around the world; it is a proven and necessary tool for assessing the quality of the log and sorting it into the appropriate bin.

MPM’s Log Rotation system analyzes a scanned log to find the best rotational position, based on product value or volume. This system fully models the downstream machinery to predict the outcome of the log and consider risk (loss of net value) in situations of mis-rotation.

Some features of our popular Log Rotation system include:

  • Finding the value of the log at each angle or at an angle based on geometry (e.g. Horns)
  • Precisely selecting rotation angle, based on resolutions and steps as fine as 1°
  • Modelling various types of log rotation machinery, including knuckle and rotary types
  • Interfacing with MPM’s log rotation analysis / correction system
  • Supporting MPM’s mill-wide centralized management system
  • Full reporting system using Crystal Reports and Microsoft SQL Server databases

Log Rotation Analysis and Correction System

An optional add-on to MPM’s Log Rotation optimization system is our Log Rotation Analysis and Correction System. This system scans and analyzes the log’s position during the rotation process and calculates adjustments so that the Log Rotation Optimizer’s position set is realized. The advantages of this system include the user feedback and reports indicating the amount of rotation adjustments required over a period of time, in addition to making live physical adjustments to the log’s rotation. The reporting tools included allow you to identify a mechanical failure and make the necessary adjustments to keep your sawmill running at optimal capacity.

MPM’s Log Breakdown Optimization system finds the optimal cutting solution of a scanned log by considering the rules and model of the breakdown machinery when fitting boards until the most valuable solution is found. This versatile product can be set to optimize the log by product value or volume, depending on your specific needs. Many machines from a variety of equipment manufacturers are modelled in the software so that the optimization decisions are accurate within the limits of the process. Furthermore, new models can be quickly implemented to fit new machine configurations and combinations.

Some features of our flexible and accurate Log Breakdown Optimization system include:

  • Scans and optimizes logs for the best sawing solution to achieve ideal product demands
  • Fully modelling the downstream machinery to predict the outcome and consider risk (loss of net value) in situations of mis-position
  • Links to MPM’s Log Rotation system for consolidation of settings and reports
  • Supporting MPM’s mill-wide centralized management system
  • Full reporting system using Crystal Reports and Microsoft SQL Server databases

The ability to accurately and intelligently break down each incoming log allows your system to achieve the highest yield or the most value possible.

MPM’s Log Breakdown Optimization system encompasses over two decades of research and product development. Your lumber operation will benefit from our years of experience and dedication to the continuous improvement of all our log optimization systems.

MPM’s Cant Optimization system is dedicated to the gang machine centre, which allows it to analyze a scanned cant and fit boards until the best recovery is found. The machine models supported include curve and straight-saw gangs having either fixed or variably-spaced saws.

Some features of our Cant Optimization system include:

  • Scans and optimizes 2 and 4 sided cants for best sawing solution
  • Optimizes cants by product value or volume
  • Considers profiler positions and skews
  • Fully models the downstream machinery to predict outcomes and consider risk (loss of net value) in situations of mis-position
  • Links with MPM’s Log Rotation or Log Breakdown Optimization systems
  • Full reporting system using Microsoft SQL Server databases and Crystal Reports

MPM’s Cant Optimization system fully supports MPM mill-wide centralized settings management system, and is an integral part of our product line. This system has gone through numerous interface upgrades and development stages to ensure that you are using the most accurate and intuitive Cant Optimization system in the industry.
